Mental Health Issues and Abortion

The Later Abortion Initiative, a project of Ibis Reproductive Health, has created a series of fact sheets that can be helpful.  This paper is on the topic of mental health in the context of reproductive care: “Attention to mental health and emotional well-being is an important part of quality health care. However, mental health can become politicized in relation to abortion rights. Understanding the relationship between abortion and mental health requires paying attention to clinical mental health conditions such as depression, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation, as well as feelings and emotions such as relief and sadness. Policies related to mental health and abortion should be based on the best scientific evidence available and also be sensitive to the needs of those seeking abortion.” To read the full report, follow the above link. In collaboration with the National Abortion Federation, the fact sheets are also available in Spanish.

Fetal Pain in the context of abortion

The Later Abortion Initiative, a project of Ibis Reproductive Health, has created a series of fact sheets that can be helpful.  This one is on the topic of fetal pain, a topic that many circulate myths about in hopes of guilting women into carry unwanted pregnancies to term. To read the full report, follow the above link. In collaboration with the National Abortion Federation, the fact sheets are also available in Spanish.

The science of “viability”

The Later Abortion Initiative, a project of Ibis Reproductive Health, has created a series of fact sheets that can be helpful.  This one is on the topic of viability: The Supreme Court has defined viability in the context of abortion as: “when, in the judgment of the attending physician on the particular facts of the case before him [sic], there is a reasonable likelihood of the fetus’ sustained survival outside the womb, with or without artificial support. Because this point may differ with each pregnancy, neither the legislature nor the courts may proclaim one of the elements entering into the ascertainment of viability — be it weeks of gestation or fetal weight or any other single factor — as the determinant.” To read the full report, follow the above link. In collaboration with the National Abortion Federation, the fact sheets are also available in Spanish.

Come as You Are - Emily Nagoski

“For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently—and far less seriously—than its male counterpart. That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them. In the years since the book’s initial publication, countless women have learned through Nagoski’s accessible and informative guide that things like stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it—and that even if you don’t always feel like it, you are already sexually whole by just being yourself.”
